چکیده

© 1998 Journals of Reproduction and Fertility 1359-6004/98 $12.50 Puberty, the transition from a sexually immature state to one of full reproductive activity, is timed by signals acting in the brain to increase activity of the hypothalamo–pituitary axis which stimulates the production of mature gametes. There are profound sex differences in the timing of puberty in many species. This occurs by sexual differentiation of the neuroendocrine control of pituitary gonadotrophin secretion. Studies using sheep as an experimental model have defined some of the factors responsible for this developmental difference in reproductive neuroendocrine function. We have studied the prenatal organizers (prenatal steroids), postnatal cues (growth and photoperiod responses) and the effectors (GnRH neurones) that time the pubertal process. Our experimental strategy has been to conduct complementary anatomical and physiological investigations to link form and function in the sexual differentiation of reproductive neuroendocrine function.

Differences in Patterns of Reproductive Allocation between the Sexes in Nicrophorus orbicollis.

Organisms are selected to maximize lifetime reproductive success by balancing the costs of current reproduction with costs to future survival and fecundity. Males and females typically face different reproductive costs, which makes comparisons of their reproductive strategies difficult. Burying beetles provide a unique system that allows us to compare the costs of reproduction between the sexes...

The interaction of male and female reproductive strategies and paternity in wild Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata

Japanese macaques reside in large, mixed-sex social groups in which various reproductive strategies of both sexes operate simultaneously. This report represents the first study combining behavioural and genetic data to examine the interaction of male and female reproductive strategies in primates (N=15 adult males, N=15 adult females, Yakushima Island, Japan). During one mating season, socially...

Sex steroid levels, reproductive indices and histological examination of gonads in adult male and female Caspian shemaya, Alburnus chalcoides

Reproductive status of Alburnus chalcoides adults from Anzali Wetland was investigated by histological examination of gonads, assessment of sex steroids (i.e. Progesterone (P), Estradiol-17ß (E2), Testosterone (T)) and reproductive indices (i.e. absolute fecundity, oocyte diameter, hepatosomatic index (%HSI) and gonadosomatic index (%GSI)). Totally, 42 females and 16 males were captured during ...

Growth and reproductive biology of Capoeta damascina (Valenciennes, 1842) from a tributary of Tigris

Growth and reproductive attributes were determined for Capoeta damascina, an endemic fish species from west of Iran. A total of 147 specimens of both sexes were sampled monthly from November 2008 to October 2009. The overall sex ratio was female biased. Males were aged 0-4 years and females 0-5 years. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated as Linf=34.81 cm, k=0.27 year-1, t0=-0.65...
